Options Counseling
During your fist appointment at Preterm, you'll have a private counseling session with a Preterm patient advocate, who will tailor the session to fit your needs. Some women need a long time to talk about their concerns, while others do not.
During this session, you can explore all your pregnancy options—abortion, adoption, and parenting—and discuss your decision in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment. You will not be pressured, but will be supported in doing what's best for you and your life right now.
We welcome you to make an appointment just for options counseling if you are feeling confused or ambivalent about what you want to do about your pregnancy.
See Making a Decision for some thoughts and resources to help you consider your pregnancy options.
What Happens in Counseling?
Preterm patient advocates are skilled listeners who have been trained to help you explore your feelings about your pregnancy, pregnancy options, and the role of your partner and family. Your patient advocate will be happy to go over your religious or spiritual concerns, how you think you will feel about your decision later, and any worries you might have about your safety and health.
You will also learn more about the abortion procedure, sexual and reproductive health, and a range of birth control methods.
The goal of options counseling is to help you feel informed, confident, and in control of your decision.
If you decide that you would like to make an adoption plan, we have an adoption program that can support you in that process. If you decide that you want to parent, we can connect you to resources in the community to assist you.
